Why hand broom?

Why hand broom?

Cleaning tools are usually hidden: visually loud, materially cheap, and disconnected from the atmosphere of a home.

If an object lives in a space, it contributes to its emotional tone. Even the most mundane tools shape how a room feels.

How might a simple cleaning tool become
an emotionally resonant object that lives quietly within the home?

How might we design a simple cleaning tool as a sculptural, emotional resonant object that reflects Muuto’s commitment to organic form, functionality, and everyday beauty?

02 Ideation

02 Ideation

During my inspiration research, I came across a Japanese bowl at the RISD Museum. Its simple form and curves that gave me a sense of hug caught my attention.

I applied this curve to a hand broom and dustpan set, designed to nest seamlessly and serve as a standalone piece, challenging the idea that cleaning tools should be hidden.

I handed the prototype to users without explanation and asked them to use it naturally.

Many held and positioned it differently than intended, showing that the design was not intuitive enough.

Ergonomic refinement

Ergonomic refinement

Based on feedback, I adjusted the handle curvature to follow the palm, the broom–dustpan angle to ease wrist strain, and the weight distribution for balance.

Muted tones, soft contrast, and material honesty draw from Scandinavian design. A gloss surface adds reflection and depth; subtle pastel colour gives the object a quiet character.
